The Baby Blue Eyes type attempts over time to cover this wound of vulnerability with a false “hardening,” such as emotional distancing, mistrust, cynicism or spiritual alienation. Very often the father was absent, or there was a lack of support or genuine presence. With its pronounced affinity for water, the Baby Blue Eyes flower essences addresses qualities of tender sensitivity, innocence and trust associated one’s early childhood relationship to the father, or other significant masculine figures that are in some way disturbed. If you have a guitar with a 1 11/16" nut or smaller, you might be able to cover two strings with finger. When playing a first position E chord her middle finger will cover the D an G strings at the second fret. For example when making a first position C chord, her ring finger will cover the E and A strings at the third fret. Etta also will finger or cover two notes on the guitar with one finger on occasion. Etta plays most songs with a two finger style (index and thumb) and loosely anchors her other three fingers near the sound hole of the guitar. For acoustic guitars, Etta favored Dreadnought size guitars. My observations about Etta’s playing come from watching the Homespun video The Fingerpicking Blues of Etta Baker. Etta herself often took popular tunes and arranged them for her playing style. The guitar tab provided on these pages are transcribed from my arrangements, which are similar in style to Etta Baker, but are not intended to be exact transcriptions of Etta’s playing.
